How did you get into engineering?

I have ADHD, so I actually wanted to do a lot of things: Aeronautical Engineer, Architect, Industrial Designer. I went to school for a bit, but after a few years I left school without a degree - did I mention I have ADHD? Meanwhile, I had been creating websites for fun and had started learning JavaScript. Eventually, I found myself working for local government, creating and maintaining websites and apps. I love making things and working with fun and smart people. I just kept moving forward, always trying to find the best people to learn, play, and build with.

What is your day to day?

We're full time nomadic and I learned that trying to have a routine is an exercise in futility. So, instead, I try to strategize for my week and create todos for my days. Some weeks the strategy is to survive and some weeks it’s to thrive. Just depends on where we are physically and emotionally. I try very hard to sleep well and wake up early. I love my early quiet time. I'll try to get some music and coffee time, maybe take in the internet a bit. I'll start to review what I need to get done today and just start working the list. On days where I don't get to do this, I try to go on a walk or some other meditative act - petting the cats for example. I need time to start my brain - my flavor of ADHD is not hyperactive so it can be very difficult to get started.

What do you do in your spare time?

Family, travel, and rig maintenance take up a lot of my time. Photography is a huge part of my life - I'm not that great at it but I love capturing what I can and appreciating the results myself. I'm learning how to compose good photos using a drone, which takes a whole different mindset.

I run our family D&D campaign on weekends. I LOVE telling stories and I am loving this whole world building thing. It makes for memorable family time that I cherish as well.

I recently took up birding which is sooo much fun. It's incredibly meditative and I really love learning about the animals we share this rock with.

What does your workspace look like?

Space is a premium in an RV. So, my desk is VERY minimal. I can't put a lot of personality on my desk but I have it elsewhere. I have a Link's Awakening Link Amiibo that I try to keep nearby for motivation - he reminds me to be courageous and determined. There's also a small Bingo plushy from the cartoon Bluey - she reminds me to play and empathize more. I recently picked up a black bear plush from the top of Pikes Peak in Colorado. He reminds me to be curious.

What music do you listen to and why?

I'll usually have Muse and Hans Zimmer on heavy rotation - two of my favorites. I think I mostly have soundtracks, electronic, rock, and some pop on my devices. I wasn't really into popular music as a kid but I loved film and games. I remember playing games like Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 7, and Ocarina of Time and being excited about the music. The music reminds me of those adventures, of how courageous we can all be, and of how small moments build to something great.

If you could compare yourself with any animal, which would it be and why?

I've recently been drawn to bears. I like how they are in balance. They seem cute and big and chonky but they can also be fast and strong and vicious. They go out and work hard for their food but they also rest hard, too. I think they're awesome creatures that I hope I don't run into in the wild, but also would like to channel a bit more in my life. I got the chonky side down: now, onto the strong and vicious. 😆
